Mark 1

1The beginning of the good news* of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.*
2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,*¡®See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,* who will prepare your way;
3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ¡°Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight¡± ¡¯,
4 John the baptizer appeared* in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel¡¯s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

    Matthew 3

1 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2¡®Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.¡¯* 3This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, ¡®The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ¡°Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.¡± ¡¯
4 Now John wore clothing of camel¡¯s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan,
6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ¡®You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance.
9 Do not presume to say to yourselves, ¡°We have Abraham as our ancestor¡±; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
10 Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

    Luke 3

1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler* of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler* of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler* of Abilene,
2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, ¡®The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ¡°Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.¡± ¡¯
7 John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, ¡®You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ¡°We have Abraham as our ancestor¡±; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9 Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.¡¯
10 And the crowds asked him, ¡®What then should we do?¡¯
11 In reply he said to them, ¡®Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.¡¯
12 Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, ¡®Teacher, what should we do?¡¯ 13 He said to them, ¡®Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.¡¯ 14 Soldiers also asked him, ¡®And we, what should we do?¡¯ He said to them, ¡®Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.¡¯

    John 1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being
4 in him was life,* and the life was the light of all people.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.
9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.*
10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.
11 He came to what was his own,* and his own people did not accept him.
12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,
13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father¡¯s only son,* full of grace and truth.
15 (John testified to him and cried out, ¡®This was he of whom I said, ¡°He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.¡± ¡¯) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son,* who is close to the Father¡¯s heart,* who has made him known.
19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ¡®Who are you?¡¯
20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ¡®I am not the Messiah.¡¯*
21 And they asked him, ¡®What then? Are you Elijah?¡¯ He said, ¡®I am not.¡¯ ¡®Are you the prophet?¡¯ He answered, ¡®No.¡¯
22 Then they said to him, ¡®Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?¡¯
23 He said, ¡®I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ¡°Make straight the way of the Lord¡± ¡¯, as the prophet Isaiah said.
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, ¡®Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah,* nor Elijah, nor the prophet?¡¯
26 John answered them, ¡®I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know,
27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.¡¯
28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.
